CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE NURSE’S SOUL
Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, Nancy Mitchell-Autio, LeAnn Thieman. Deerfield Beach, Fla: Health Communications, Inc; 2001. Softcover. 361 pages, $12.95.

Reviewed by Katie Schatz RN, MSN, NP-C

Chicken Soup for the Nurse’s Soul invokes the familiar tone and comfort of the Chicken Soup series of books. This edition is divided in to 9 chapters, including "The True Meaning of Nursing," Moments," "Challenges," and "Miracles." The stories in these chapters demonstrate the special commitment and caring presence of nurses, and help to illustrate the essence of caring and the difference nurses make.

In addition to nursing stories, this book incorporates stories from other healthcare workers. Each chapter has humorous stories as well as stories that bring tears to your eyes. At the beginning of each chapter, thought-provoking quotes enhance the reader’s experience. The "Defining Moments" chapter starts with a quote from Albert Schweitzer: "Life becomes harder for us when we live for others, but it also becomes richer and happier."

The stories in Chicken Soup for the Nurse’s Soul connect the reader’s heart to the common threads of the human spirit. These narratives give the reader the essence of the joys and challenges of nursing. As a nurse and fan of the Chicken Soup books, I found the stories in this book enjoyable.
