Trauma Nursing Secrets

This paperback reference book presents important trauma nursing information in a concise and novel format. The book is divided into 4 sections; the first section introduces the reader to the concepts of trauma systems, mechanisms of injury, and prehospital management. The second section presents information on forensics and injury prevention and introduces new information on weapons of mass destruction. These chapters provide an excellent overview of the foundations of trauma nursing.

In the third section, a system-by-system discussion of organ injuries and related treatment modalities is provided. The trauma-related injuries covered in this section are inclusive of the more common injuries seen by trauma nurses. In addition, the questions posed and answered by the authors provide insightful and current information on the management of patients with these injuries.

The fourth and final section provides thorough and timely information on some of the less common but more challenging problems facing trauma teams, including burns; pediatric, geriatric, and obstetric trauma; and domestic violence.

Each chapter presents information using a question-and-answer format, allowing information to be presented succinctly and in a way that is easy to read and comprehend. In addition, the author uses tables and figures effectively to elaborate and clarify information in the answers. However, if readers wanted to explore specific content on a particular topic, they would need to read the entire chapter in the hope that they would find the information, which could be time-consuming and frustrating.

Each chapter provides a bibliography and most of the references listed were published within 6 years. The author also included a list of related Web sites in many of the chapters. Although Web sites may come and go, this is an attractive and helpful feature.

Though not specifically identified, the target audience for this book appears to be the practicing trauma nurse, but it could serve as a ready reference for nursing students who might have a clinical experience in a trauma setting. The author is to be commended for compiling this important information in a user-friendly manner.
