Improving time to PCI: FINESSE results

Results from the FINESSE trial, reported in the New England Journal of Medicine (2008;358[21]: 2205–2217)[Abstract/Free Full Text] , show no advantage of early abciximab or a half-dose lytic plus abciximab combination over primary percutaneous coronary intervention alone in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction. Experts say it is time to focus on improving door-to-balloon times, not on "facilitating" with drugs, and educating the public on symptom recognition.

A handbook for nurses on patient safety and quality

In April 2008, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation jointly sponsored the development of Patient Safety and Quality: An Evidence-Based Handbook for Nurses. The purpose of this free resource is to bring quality and safety into focus for nurses working in today’s complex health care environment. This book is divided into 6 sections, each offering peer-reviewed discussion and reviews of patient safety and quality issues. The book may be viewed and downloaded from http://www.ahrq.gov/qual/nurseshdbk/ or you can order a copy of the book on CD by calling the AHRQ Publication Clearinghouse at (800) 358–9295 or e-mailing AHRQPubs{at}ahrq.hhs.gov.

Treating patients who use tobacco

The Tobacco Use and Dependence Guideline Panel has identified effective, experimentally validated tobacco dependence treatments and practices, resulting in the Public Health Service-sponsored Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence: 2008 Update. This product is designed to assist clinicians in delivering and supporting effective treatments for tobacco use and dependence. The guidelines were put together after a systematic review and meta-analysis of articles on tobacco dependence and its treatment. For more information, go to http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/tobacco/default.htm.

Evidence-based guidelines to antithrombotic and thrombolytic therapy

The American College of Chest Physicians has published the 8th edition of Antithrombotic and Thrombolytic Therapy: ACCP Guidelines, available at http://www.chestjournal.org/content/vol133/6_suppl). These guidelines provide an extensive critical review of the literature related to management of thromboembolic disorders. Each chapter includes the clinical question under consideration, the clinical trials evaluating the evidence, and, finally, the recommendations.
