Assessing Tissue Oxygenation
Because of the high acuity of hospitalized patients, nurses need an expanded knowledge base to provide comprehensive nursing care. Accurate assessment, prompt recognition, and proper management are vital components in the nursing care of patients with compromised functioning. The authors describe the physiological relationships between hemoglobin concentration, oxygen saturation, cardiac output, and acid-base balance.

Telemetry to Home: Successful Discharge of Patients With Ventricular Assist Devices
Treatment choices for patients with advanced heart failure include pharmacological therapy, surgical intervention, and heart transplantation. Because no single procedure benefits all patients with end-stage heart failure, current research focuses on the application of mechanical assist devices. The authors describe a program that was developed to care for patients with VADs on a telemetry unit. A case study of the successful discharge of a patient with a VAD in place is also presented.

Prone Positioning of Trauma Patients With Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome and Open Abdominal Incisions
To date, few studies have investigated the effects of prone positioning in trauma patients with ARDS, particularly those with open abdominal wounds. Two case reports are presented in this article, involving 2 trauma patients for whom traditional methods of prone positioning were not feasible. In both cases, periods of prone positioning were successfully accomplished by using new and rather unconventional methods.
